How can VNA help you with handling grief?
Handling Loss & Grief
Every life is precious. Each and every person who passes through our lives touches us in profound and special ways. We take the time to grieve their passing and celebrate their lives. We remember them with love.
Grief and loss are very real and sometimes difficult to handle. Hospice not only cares for the patient but cares for the entire family. Our goal is holistic. We provide comfort and compassion to our patients and the caregivers who love and care for them.
The VNA offers grief education and support services to those who are ill, their family members, caregivers, friends and anyone trying to deal with grief. Professionally coordinated programs include coping with anticipatory grief, dealing with the emotional and psychological aspects of dying, the needs of caregivers, and ultimately, grief after the loss of a loved one.

VNA Bereavement Services
Bereavement services usually extend for 13 months beyond the death of our patients. Contacts are made with family and friends through phone calls, cards, letters and personal visits if needed. Services are offered and referrals are made to help loved ones during these especially difficult times.
- Individual and Family Therapy is available for our families and survivors of our former patients, and can be facilitated either at the VNA office or at the family’s home.
- Educational Programs include instruction about the dying process, grief, bereavement or others issues related to end of life care. These are offered at no charge to community organizations or agencies that might benefit from our help.
- Our General Bereavement Support Group meets the second Tuesday of every month, from 3 – 4:30 p.m. at the VNA office, 2253 West Grandview Boulevard, Erie. This program is ongoing and is open to anyone who is coping with or has experienced the loss of a family member or friend. VNA support groups are free of charge and open to the entire community as well as to VNA families. It is our goal to offer compassion and comfort for all those who are mourning a significant loss.
