Skin markers offer a simple, effective way to improve efficacy and reduce callbacks in mammography
CORRY, Pa. (April 4, 2024) — LECOM Health Corry Memorial Hospital has received the Skin Marking in Mammography Excellence Award from Beekley Medical®.
Beekley Medical recognized the breast center at Corry Memorial Hospital for using the 5-Shape Beekley Skin Marking System® for clear communication and precise interpretation for the best patient care.
According to Beekley Medical, five distinct shapes clearly communicate and permanently document the location of moles, skin scars from prior surgeries, palpable masses, nipple position, focal pain or other non-palpable areas of concern directly on the mammographic image.
By using the 5-Shape system as a best practice, Corry Memorial Hospital has helped reduce patient callbacks, unnecessary additional views, and unnecessary additional radiation for the patient. It has also allowed them to promote better communication between the technologist and radiologist, while providing permanent documentation.
“This award is a testament to the high-quality, patient-centered care that is provided here at LECOM Health Corry Memorial Hospital,” said Dan Grolemund, Corry Memorial Hospital President and CEO. “I would like to congratulate our mammography team for this outstanding achievement.”
In an anonymous online survey conducted by Beekley Medical in 2021 to 580 respondents, 79% of women who have had a skin marker felt it was absolutely essential or very important that their imaging centers use skin markers. Forty-seven percent felt more confident they were getting a more accurate mammogram.
