Corry Memorial Hospital is seeking a dedicated and skilled Surgical Registered Nurse (RN) to join our surgical services team. The Surgical RN provides safe, compassionate, and high-quality care throughout the perioperative experience while working collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, PACU staff, and the surgical team.

Position Summary

The Surgical RN provides direct patient care to all patient populations. Responsibilities include preparing patients and the surgical environment, assisting with surgical procedures, monitoring patient condition, maintaining surgical equipment and supplies, and ensuring compliance with established standards for patient safety and infection prevention.

The successful candidate will be comfortable functioning in both circulating and scrub nurse roles and will demonstrate strong clinical judgment, communication, organization, and teamwork.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provide compassionate, professional care to patients before, during, and after surgical procedures.
  • Assess and reassess patients and promptly identify and respond to changes in condition.
  • Prepare, position, pad, and drape patients safely according to procedure requirements.
  • Maintain medical and surgical asepsis throughout procedures.
  • Perform circulating and scrub nurse responsibilities as assigned.
  • Prepare and maintain the operating room before, between, and after procedures.
  • Open and prepare sterile supplies and surgical equipment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the location, operation, care, and maintenance of surgical equipment and instruments.
  • Ensure pre-operative requirements are complete, including history and physical, informed consent, laboratory results, and other required documentation.
  • Assist with sponge, needle, and instrument counts according to hospital policy.
  • Accurately handle, label, document, and maintain surgical specimens.
  • Administer medications and parenteral fluids safely according to physician orders and hospital policy.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of anesthetic medications, their actions, and potential side effects.
  • Monitor and respond appropriately to physiological and behavioral changes.
  • Communicate pertinent patient information, laboratory and radiology results, and intraoperative findings to the appropriate members of the healthcare team.
  • Provide a thorough handoff report to the PACU nurse.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete patient documentation.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of instrument processing, sterilization, and biological monitoring.
  • Participate in instrument processing as workload and schedule permit.
  • Maintain controlled-substance accountability according to hospital policy.
  • Provide patient and family education and reassurance as appropriate.
  • Protect patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with physicians, coworkers, and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Demonstrate sound clinical judgment and the ability to respond appropriately in emergency and stressful situations.
  • Maintain productivity, demonstrate initiative, and effectively manage time and competing priorities.
  • Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, infection prevention, and other departmental initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Pennsylvania.
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Current BLS certification required.
  • Previous perioperative, operating room, or surgical nursing experience preferred.
  • Ability to function effectively as both a circulating and scrub nurse preferred.
  • Strong assessment, critical-thinking, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced surgical environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient safety, quality care, and service excellence.
