INTERNAL MEDICINE EDUCATIONAL GOALS and OBJECTIVES

Patient Care (PC)	Residents will gather a detailed history with complete description of the symptoms Resident demonstrate performance of a complete physical exam Residents can identify resources for information on common procedures Residents demonstrate the elicitation of advance directives Able to list primary diagnosis and a list of differential diagnosis Knows indications for common procedures	Prioritize patient’s problems Residents will present a patient history without notes Resident teaches junior residents/medical students the fundamentals of history taking Resident teaches medical students the fundamentals of the time sensitive P/E Able to confirm diagnosis and prioritize differential diagnosis Resident demonstrates the delivery of bad news Knows indications for procedures and conducts with minimal supervision	Performs well in ambiguous situation Spends time appropriate to the complexity of the problem Elicits subtle findings on physical examination Makes diagnoses based on evidence and confirms and teaches the art of medical diagnosis to junior residents and students Resident demonstrates the delivery of bad news Knows indications for procedures and conducts with no supervision
Medical Knowledge (MK)	Resident has basic understanding and is able to briefly describe the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and treatment of common diseases including pneumonia, DVT, chest pain, pre- operative care, COPD & asthma exacerbations, DM and management, CHF exacerbation, non-surgical abdomen, acute GI bleeds	Resident demonstrates broad differential diagnosis skills Resident demonstrates appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic planning Resident is able to describe in detail and teach the pathophysiology, epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of common diseases on the medicine inpatient	Develop an analytic approach to clinical scenarios Resident demonstrates independence in decision making Resident is proficient in the common disorders seen on medicine inpatient and is able to teach students and junior residents effectively
Practice-Based Learning & Improvement (PBLI)	Resident prioritizes treatment decisions based on patient’s severity of illness	Asks for help when needed, self- motivated to acquire knowledge	Resident will use major textbooks, review articles, and current literature to facilitate patient care
Interpersonal & Communication Skills (ICS)	Resident communicates regularly with patient and his/her family Resident provides feedback to junior team members	Resident function as an effective team leader	Resident is concerned about the patient’s comfort Able to deal with challenging patients and families Resident addresses end of life decisions with minimal faculty input
Professionalism (P)	Resident recognizes and takes steps to correct his/her deficiencies Resident treats team members with respect, including nurses and other health care providers Resident completes medical records on time	Able to delegate responsibility to others	Set a tone of respect and collegiality for the team Identifies ethical issues and employs available resources to solve them
System-Based Practice (SBP)	Resident can effectively initiate the appropriate use of other consultants in the care of patients with lung diseases	Resident serves as a consultant to other services with moderate faculty input	Understands and develop cost-effective care Expertise in Medical practice knowledge and delivery systems
